Markus Friedrich (Fred) Leupold, a German immigrant, and his brother-in-law Adam Voelpel established Leupold & Stevens in 1907 under that name. The business at the time specialized in survey equipment repair.  John Cyprian (J.C.) Stevens hired Leupold & Voelpel in 1911 to produce a water level recorder he had created and patented. Leupold, Voelpel and Co. was the new name of the business in 1914 after the product's initial success.  The business also created several additional ground-breaking pieces of technology, including the Telemark water recorder, which was patented in 1939.  This gadget would make it possible to monitor water resources remotely by telephone and communicate information on water levels.

The name of the business was changed to Leupold & Stevens in 1942.

Marcus Leupold's failure to hit a deer with his rifle inspired Leupold & Stevens to start manufacturing gun scopes after World War II. He reportedly shouted as his scope became foggy "Hell! This scope could be improved upon by me! "as the deer ran away.  Leupold created the Duplex Reticle in 1962, which is used by the majority of riflescopes today.
